Whoops! Thanks for letting me know. I changed it. Just add the peanut butter after you take the mixture off the burner. Then add it to the oats. Hope that helps. Sorry about that.

Sorry for another post...I came back to it to make them, and you don't mention when you add the peanut butter. Do you add it with the boiling mixture or just at the end when stirring with the oats?

Hi Laurie,

The original recipe had milk and butter, so you should be fine. I substituted because dairy is starting to cause a problem for me. These cookies are so good and super easy. Be careful. You can easily eat way too many. ;)

Would you have to use a nut milk if not allergic to dairy? And same with the butter...So just regular milk and butter. These sound great and so easy!

I think food is a great way to bond, especially making it.

I'm not sure the coconut will work. As I explained to Alta, I tried it with crispy rice, and it just got gummy. The oats are “cooked” when the hot mixture is poured over them. They expand and soak up the mixture. So, you need something that is going to do that and well. I'm just not sure if coconut will do that. Alta might try quinoa flakes. I've never used them, but a cereal that you can easily cook with hot water would probably work best.

It's nice and easy for the kids. One of the reasons why I like it so much. I think your boys will have a ball. If you can keep them from eating it up before it's ready. ;)

Well, I discovered when trying them with crispy rice that it doesn't work with everything. The oats are "cooked" when the hot mixture is poured over them. They expand and soak up the mixture. So, you need something that is going to do that and well. The crispy rice got gummy. I'm think quinoa flakes might be best to start. But, I just don't know how well they will work. Might need to just try it. ;)

Loved this story... against all odds, I find myself in the role of "step mother" - so this really spoke to me! Food is a great way for people to bond, and cooking has certainly been a form of communication in our house!

This cookie recipe is right up my alley (long ingredients list and too many steps scare me off!). I saw someone inquiring about using something to replace the oats - and I wondered if coconut wouldn't work nicely (haystacks?) or gluten-free cereal.
