Gluten-free personal care products are a controversial subject. Most doctors say that people with Celiac Disease/gluten intolerance can only be affected by gluten if we ingest it. Supposedly, we can’t absorb enough through the skin to affect us. They do give way when it comes to people with dermatitis herpetiformis. But personally…
I would rather be safe than sorry. I have been going back and forth on the subject in my own head for years. I waver between making sure everything I put on my body is gluten-free (really a pain in the you-know-what when you realize all that it entails) to just going with the cheapest thing not-tested-on-animals I can find.
But, every time I go back to the cheapest thing, I get something weird going on with my skin. I don’t seem to have my normal reaction like when I accidentally ingest gluten, but I get a reaction nonetheless.
Now, truth be told, I have had skin issues when it comes to gluten. I have never been officially diagnosed with dermatitis herpetiformis, but I have seen dermatologists that just couldn’t figure out what the heck was going on with my skin. Then later, when I went gluten-free, all my skin issues seemed to vanish into thin air.
Coincidence? I think not.
Anyway, this is all leading up to some gluten-free personal care products I was sent to try. The company is Green Beaver. You can read all about them on their website, as well as on Heidi’s review of Green Beaver Personal Care Products on her website, Adventures of a Gluten-Free Mom. (I love Heidi. She’s one of my girls. And, she can make a kick-a$$ dye-free, allergen-free, kid’s birthday cake. Check out Batman and Star Wars Legos.)
Anyway, back to our story… I gave these products a shot. I am going to do my review like Heidi did. I will tell you what I got and what I thought in each paragraph.
#1. Shampoo – This one was a little weird. I didn’t really know what it was like to have my hair clean. I mean really clean. If you think your hair is clean when you shampoo it, think again. It is most likely coated with some form of something that I am sure I can’t pronounce. When I used this shampoo, my hair squeaked. And, it definitely needed conditioner because it was so clean that there wasn’t anything keeping it from tangling. But that is ok because I was also sent…
#2. Conditioner – I also really liked this conditioner. It made my hair soft without feeling like it was coated with… yeah I still have no idea what is coating my hair with the cheap shampoos. So far, two for two. Good score. Next, we have…
#3. Body Wash – I usually use soap that my mother makes for me. It is fantastic and only glycerin and light scent. But, I really enjoyed this body wash. Once again, I felt clean. But I am used to that with the soap. Oh, and all of the products so far had a beautiful lavender scent. It isn’t too heavy at all. So, after our hair and bodies are all clean, we need to clean our teeth. So, next in line is…
#4. Toothpaste – Um, I know I am going to sound like a broken record, but here goes. Clean. Yes, my teeth were clean. No weird coating that I didn’t even realize was being placed on my teeth by my old Crest toothpaste. And, this tooth paste does not contain fluoride. I know most people think we need fluoride to have healthy teeth, but I’m not so sure. A lot of controversy on this subject. And, fluoride has been known to cause other health problems from ingestion. Why else were the teachers such freaks about making sure we did not swallow the fluoride treatments we had in grade school? (Do they still do those?) And, no matter how hard we try, I think we all know that a little toothpaste always get ingested. I mean, if we ingest lipstick from wearing it on our lips, we must certainly ingest some toothpaste. After we clean ourselves all up, we need to make sure we stay smelling pretty, so next up is…
#5. Deodorant – I just realized how that word came about. Just one of those words I took for granted. Funny. Oh, anyway… um, where was I? Yes. Sweet smelling. This stuff was good. I usually have a strange issue with deodorants. I have really sensitive skin, anyway. And, putting it on such sensitive skin right after I run a razor over it has led to some icky things. But, this worked quite nicely while still keeping me smelling like lavender. Nice thing to smell like. And, last but not least…
#6. Body Lotion – Smells nice, again. Like the lavender. Great lotion. Made my hands soft with no greasy residue. I could use my iPad right away. That’s important.
Green Beaver has many more products that I did not get to try, like tinted lip balm. I really like the idea of tinted lip balm that is gluten-free because I have thought I was allergic to lipsticks my whole life, only to realize I was just reacting to the gluten in them. That sucked. My lips would feel like they had gotten sunburned for weeks.
For the giveaway, Green Beaver is going to give one lucky recipient a shampoo, conditioner, body wash and body lotion from their new square line in one of three scents: Fresh Mint, Lavender Rosemary, and Cranberry Delight. The winner gets to choose the scent.
So, what do you think? Do you want to try these products? Do you want to win? Just leave a comment below telling me which scent you would want if you won.
